Spent an extra month in depot as my squad was used to demonstrate mounted rifle drill (which had not been done for years) for Queen Mothers Parade at the end of May 1960.Three months in central charge office, three months at Magistrates Court then transferred to the new Marlborough Station under Pete Stannard. After 18months transferred to CID Property Section under Bob Burrell. After six months then joined the new Law and Order Maintenance Section as one of the first three Detectives working under Mike Wiltshire (Det/Insp) and Angus Ross (Det/Sgt). Responsible for investigation of political crime in those early 60's.Left Force in February 1964. Played regular first team soccer for Police during my service. Thereafter worked for international group in Rhodesia, Kenya and South Africa for 16 years before joining theLife Assurance Industry where I currently am and from which I will retire in the next 2/3 years. I was born in Nyasaland and moved to Rhodesia at the age of 5 when my father's job in the Police Force there came to an end (investigating political detainees, he unfortunately reported that most of them had done nothing wrong!!). After Springvale and Falcon, I had 2 weeks holiday before joining Squad 14/79, which was almost immediately designated a mounted squad. After doing escorts for the Independence celebrations, opening of Parliament and touring with Police Display, I was posted to Inyanga, where my brother had been before me in Special Branch. Left 9 months later to go to business college in the United Kingdom - apparently not a moment too soon...someone told me that the 5th Brigade set up shop a couple of weeks later at the Inyanga Army Base! Now living in Hastings on the South Coast, working two days a week in Teddington and the rest from home. Interested to hear from anyone who served at Inyanga or in Squad 14/79, or anyone who knew my brother, Nick Bewes (and he would like to make comms with Phil Barton, if anyone can find an e-mail address for him that actually works!)

Squad of 7/74, equitation disaster of note. bit of time with CPU,Harare as rookies, Roy Bennet & I were the undercover boys, which meant getting a few slaps from RLI boys at Coq Dor. Couple of years in Control Room with likes of Dave Lumb, Gary Loxton, Stu Hamer, Bill Mcarthy and a load of other good boys. Whole lot of us ended up in Bulawayo, for reasons not worth mentioning.  Bit of time Byo Drug Squad then back to Harare to Dog Section.  After training school back to Byo Dogs, where we were the operators.  Tudor Jones, Doug Bing, Tracer Spackman, Chris Digges etc.  What a team of dogs !  But what a unit ! As we age, we suddenly want to hear from old mates that we, for whatever reasons have lost contact with over the years. They were the good times, they were the bad times, they were the best times.

After participating in 1970's Police display I was transferred to Umtali Central, then off to Gutu, thereafter Fort Vic Central, Featherstone, Gwelo Central, Redcliff, Chakari and finally Salisbury Central. Still deeply involved in the art of military modelling, in which I sculpt all of my own figurines. I am currently redoing a mounted BSAP Trooper which I am modelling for moulding purposes. I sold a number of the 1st series to ex-members and am thinking about modelling an African Constable wearing the old helmet Shako helmet, possibly with his bicycle, but the spokes may be too difficult to mould. I have changed direction in life and am now a technician in the prosthetics/orthotics field and loving it, fabricating custom partial feet out of silicone for partial foot amputees, mainly diabetics.

I was first stationed at Bindura and then Mt. Darwin. In October, 73 transferred to Support Unit D Troop (acting SO) and patrolled the Valley until the ceasefire in April, 74. Resigned June and went on arms buying trip for Major Ian King (Smith's military attache). Am currently involved in humanitarian demining with a new landmine resistant vehicle, the FLEA (Forward Light Escort, Armored) which utilizes hydraulic suspension and fiberglass armor. This is based on my having been blown up near Mt. Darwin with Inspector Ted Painting in October, 1973 in a Police Land Rover.

During recruit training, dispatched to Wankie for +/- 30 days as part of a task force to back up local defences resultant from Op Spider, the banning of the ANC. First posting was to Gatooma district, Midland Province, service in Gatooma, Hartley and Battlefields attending riots at Rimuka, Lower Gwelo, Harare township, Machipisa Square and subsequently Sakubva !! until 1960 when posted to Salisbury (Depot) attending for +/- 2 years,the Federal Post Office Engineering College, Belvedere, as the first intake of Police officers, to study Radio Communications theory and practice. On graduation transferred to Signals Branch and posted to ZEF4 Workshops, Umtali, Manicaland Province, until attachment to SB H/Q Branch 1 CIO at "Redbricks" from 1966 to retirement in 1980. During this time I shared the CIO representation along with various Technical Officers on the JSB ( Joint Signals Board ) with the destinction as the longest serving member. I had the honour to work with some great people in the Air Force, Army and the Police.
Married Renate E, Goetz, Marandellas, in January 1969. Our first child, Natasha was born November 1971 and for the past 10 years has been the executive Pastry Chef for the Piedmont Driving Club, the oldest private club in Atlanta. Natasha did her 4 year degree in Food Service Managment at Johnson & Wales, Charleston SC and worked her way up through the Grove Park Inn and Country Club, Ashville NC, Waverley Stouffers, Renaissance Hartsfield Airport and the Ritz Carlton, Atlanta and was the Culinary Federation Of America's 2008 Pastry Chef of the year for the South East region of the USA. Our son Rolf was born January 1974, He graduated from Stetson University with a degree in Business management and joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office in 1998 and is currently a member of a multi agency Special Operations task force to combat serious crime. Our July 1989 US born daughter Tanya, is currently attending the University of Tampa on a US Airforce nursing scholarship as a member of the Airforce Reserve and posted to the University of South Florida campus on attachment to their AFROTC programme. On leaving government service I entered the private sector in the telecommunications field which provided us with the opportunity to go to the USA in 1982. In 1998 Renate joined the Sheriff's Office as a Police Service Officer ( Civilian position ) until the present. I decided to retire again in July 2000 on reaching the age of 60 and on attaining US citizenship as my contribution to the millenium !

Still have affection for BSAP and S.Rhodesia that I will carry to the grave. But reportage on Zimbabwe & old Rhodesia non-existent in USA with minor exceptions. Chance remark (You would cry if you saw the Country now) prompted this web search. Bringing back memories of Roy Welenski, Garfield Todd and Ian Smith, all of whom I knew from attachment to short-lived posting to Federation Parliament. Later wound up in Gatooma and took a long look at the wages being paid and moved on to South America (Brazil) and New York. 25 years in Aviation and semi-retired for 10 years as private investor.

He was in Morris depot at the same time as me, but in a different squad. S.O. 'Pop' Ellis (no relation) was my squad leader. Visited station and then-current M.I.C in 1987 -- all seemed well-organized and efficient. Brought back fond memories
