Chairman's Chat
At this time last year I chatted about two particular items, being the
potential demise of the Broadway Braai and the joining of us by General Sir
Michael Walker. I am delighted to be able to return to both these subjects
in this issue.
As you will see elsewhere, we have managed to secure premises for this
year's Braai at Whitwell on Rutland Water. Your Hon Sec and I have both been
there; it is a delightful setting and, whilst a little more expensive than
in the past, it is easy to get to and will serve us well. The event will go
ahead this year so please give it your support.
Michael Walker, in the meantime, has accepted the post of Patron to our
Trust and has subsequently been elevated to the Peerage (the two are not
necessarily connected). We now have General the Lord Walker as our patron.
Michael came along to our Christmas Sundowner and I will long live with the
memory of him and Mike Horner (boyhood friends and, then, sons of serving
members) meeting for the first time in approx 50 years. That is what the
Association is all about.
Next event on our calendar is the AGM. I am delighted (and you are lucky)
that all our retiring committee members are happy to stand again. We have a
particularly good bunch of hard-working committee members at the moment so
please come along and give them your support. I look forward to seeing you
there.

A Brief Word from the Honourable Sec
Just as I'm getting used to things, I have to down pens and fly (literally).
In 2 days time I am off to New York for a two month stint at UNHQ. The
Spring Edition of Outpost, in which this report will appear, will probably
be out before my return. In advance I will thank Mike Abbotts and Bertie
Cubitt for keeping the secretarial side of things going in my absence. I
apologise for abandoning my post, but this is something I cannot afford to
miss (in more ways than one).
The response to my appeal for members to either get their subs up to date,
or advise if there was any problem, was moderately successful. Several
defaulters are now right up to date, and a couple paid in advance. A couple
of other cases we have been able to discuss and resolve satisfactorily to
all concerned.
When I get back, Bertie and I will be contacting the more long term
defaulters and asking what their intentions are. Decisions will then have to
be made. I am going to 'cut and paste' a part of the appropriate para. from
my last report.
'We accept that many members are finding things very tight financially and
are quite prepared to make allowances. However, a lot of those in default
would appear to be in a position to pay. - - - - - If you are several years
behind but can only afford to pay a couple at this time, that's OK. We can
sort out the rest later. Please do make the effort though.'
A lot of members contacted me re the 'Upgrading of British State Pensions'
mentioned in the last Outpost. I have forwarded on a specimen letter to all
who asked. For general info, I sent off a letter to them over two months
ago, seeking to be allowed to pay back more than the 6 years which they
permitted me to do some years ago. Receipt has been acknowledged but nothing
further heard. I'll keep you posted on developments - if any.
Take care.

North West Region
10 DECEMBER 2006 saw the North West Christmas 'do' at the Myerscough. In
respect of which 8131 Brian Hodson wrote 'I have just arrived back home
after a very pleasant Christmas lunch at the Myerscough once again, our
thanks to Rod Wilson for organising this.
4933 Rod Wilson writes: Those in attendance at Myerscough were: 4041 Allen
Day, 5607 Harry Davies with guests Penny & Pete, 6314 Barry and Val Marsden,
8913 Edward Archdale and Sandy, 7207 Arnold Wooley and 203679 Paula Wooley,

Terry Coleman, Rona Johnston.
11 March 2007-Rod Wilson reports: On the wall at the entrance to the
Myerscough. Hotel is a crafted brass plaque which announces to all that the
BSAP Association members meet there on the second Sunday of March, June,
September and December at 12 noon - and at any other time when called to
discuss matters such as a new strain of carrot found in Hodson's fields or a
new strain of Rose in WPC Wooley's nursery.
The man who started all this some twenty years ago is 4041 Allen Day and
would you believe he forgot to attend our last meeting! A Drumhead Court
Martial is being prepared and even when Trooper Day's defence in mitigation
mentions his Naval service and the fact that he was one of the first onto
the beaches at Normandy -and that he was good to the kids his sentence could
still be severe - keel hauling comes to mind. Otherwise some 12 or so
members did make it, namely Harry Davies, Arnold & Paula Wooley, Ken & Dot
Stanford-Smith, Steve Robins, Lance Combrinck with Liz & Charlotte, and
Barry & Val Marsden. (I think that Rod Wilson was there also, ED). Apologies
from Flash Firth, Frank & Margaret Dearden, Roy Asten and somewhat belated,
Allen Day.
On SUNDAY 15th JULY at 12noon we have a BRAAI . £6-50 per head, under 5s
free.
Worchester
5998 Ian Dunbar reports:
On Saturday February 3rd 2007 The Three Pears, situated just off Junction 6
of the M5 near Worcester, became the latest hostelry to be accorded the
accolade of hosting a reunion of former members of the BSA Police.
The venue had been chosen by 7440 Jeff Manning and 5956 Dave Kennedy as
being approximately midway between their respective abodes and a convenient
place to meet up with 7392 ? (they were unsure of his number) Butch Walker,
who was due to pass through the UK enroute back to South Africa from a visit
to the USA. As it turned out, he changed his plans in anticipation of the BA
strike but, in the mean time, Jeff and Dave had circulated other former
members, mainly with a Bulawayo bias, who they thought might like to attend.
The motley crew who attended were 5956 Dave Kennedy, 5965 Pete Fitzgerald,
5998 Ian Dunbar, 5659 Hoppy Hopkins, 6789 Matt Harwood, 7136 Dave Lynas,
(all accompanied by their respective memsahibs) 7440 Jeff Manning, 7423 Rod
Morton, 7298 Julian Hicks, 9240 Dick Iddon and 7612 Jerry Rickson. The last
two named were late on parade but wasted no time in catching up with the
others in terms of thirst slaking.
What the gathering lacked in the quantity of members attending, it more than
made up in quality and stamina, with the function lasting from 1300 to 2330.
With the Premier Travel Lodge being within easy staggering distance of the
bar, The Three Pears was an ideal venue and perhaps the net could be cast a
bit wider for a future gathering there.
DAVE KENNEDY WRITES: As regards the arrangements made for the Worcester
gathering, I can claim no credit as the idea, venue etc were at the
instigation of Jeff Manning to whom full credit must be given, All I did was
throw a few ex Bulawayo connected names into the hat. So it is well done to
Jeff, also well done to Dumpy for finding a pen!!

The UK Inpost
8131 Brian Hodson writes of his visit to the VSC for the London Gathering on
07/11/2006 saying "I spent a very pleasant evening at the VSC last night.
Really great to meet old friends who I have not seen since leaving Rhodesia.
Two of these being Alan Toms, and my old sidekick Mike Loftus. Unfortunately
Fred P. was unable to attend so I missed out on one of his really good
cigars. Nice to see the usual crowd gathered, Mike Abbotts, Mike Leach, and
Derek Humberstone etc. I am quite surprised that so many people travel great
distances to attend, and on a regular basis. When we eventually move to the
South, I will no doubt become a frequent visitor to the VSC meetings,
especially if it involves Mike Abbotts buying me another pint." (He is sooo
kind. Ed.)
4853 Fred Punter reported on his visit to the Shamwari Club in Natal. Also
in attendance there were Derek Bennison; Dave Lynn; Des Howse; Trevor
Dutton; Nobby Clark; Rob Hamilton; Hank Bresler; Stretch Hughes; Derrick
Starr; Scotty MacCaulley; Paul Shewell; Roy Welsh; Kevin Wood; Dick and
Jenny Isemonger; Alan and Myrna Brent; Fred and Lindsay Mason; Perky
Perkins; Chris Driver; Pete Cutting; Lionel Baker and Rose.
5391 Richard Smallshaw expressed his sorrow at the death of Johnny Vye
(5143) with whom he served at Goromonzi in 1957 and were the only police
members of the Goromonzi Cricket XI, which included the Irvine Brothers. He
went on to say that he met up with John some 50 years later at the London
Dinner and later sent John a photo of the team. Issue 64 also reminded
Richard of the only Rhodesian to be a member of Squad 7/55 - namely 5396 Pat
Jeffries, who sadly died on 17/11/2006 at Brits, South Africa. Pat sold
Richard his Francis Barnett 197cc m/c for £30!
8304 Syd Weatherall, acknowledging receipt of his first copy of the UK
Outpost, wrote "Ah, lovely memories and such names brought back to memory.
Great enjoyment it brought me together with a little sadness at those who
have passed on. Again, thank you so much." [Regrettably Syd underwent a
closer sad experience when his wife Doreen died in January 2007. Ed.]
6904 Ian Lawrence writing from Jo`Burg asks if we would pass on his
greetings to all of my colleagues and their families, in Blighty. He added,
'To those who I note are unwell I wish a speedy recovery'. Being a good chap
he also added 'Special greetings to Mike & Aubrey Abbotts, and Bert Cubitt.'
4518 Dave Le Guern 'wandering' through an old suitcase of 'effects' came
across the cartoon (below, left) which he drew to mark the idea of a
(nameless) OC issuing all stations with a new method of sounding the alarm
in case of attack - hence the issue of the hunting horn! To add to the
Greener Gun, small pack with 5 rounds ammo, a Detex clock, Emergency flare,
handcuffs, torch, and a beat card.
5334 John Worden writes "My wife Doreen and I paid a recent visit to our
daughter Mandy and family (husband Derek, son of the late Supt Johnny
Worsley) who live at Upper Hutt near Wellington, NZ. We had a family reunion
on Xmas Day when we were joined by our son Chris (ex PO 110849) on a flying
visit from UK, and Derek's aunt June and husband
4732 Phil Hosford ex C/Insp. During our travels in North Island we spent a
night with 9814 Clive Boyce and his family in the small town of Te Aroha.
Clive asked to be put in touch with the Association - We duly complied when
we had lunch in Howick, Auckland with 5339 Dick Hopper, his wife Lyn and
5333 Dave Le Seuer who drove up from his home in Cambridge and joined us.
This was a memorable reunion of three squad mates from combined squads 2 &
3/55 and even more memorable for Dave and I who had not met, as far as we
can recall, for 50 years! Dick Hopper is a noted ship modeller and he has
built a seven feet long working model of the Pretoria Castle on which he and
I sailed to SA in April 1955. Dick and Dave are stalwarts of the NZ Branch.
Our trip brought home to us the continuing companionship of the world wide
family that is the Association."
6369 Eric Birrell commenting on the photo in Issue 64 furnished by WFR May
Sinclair said "I like the pic of a young me! The bloke next to me is 5702
Dave Rogers. I have not a clue as to who the fat man is."
4158 Tim Weimer wonders how many of the Traffic Branch of the 1960's
remember Major Tom Milldebrandt, the Education Officer of the Arizona
Highway Patrol who came to the Rhodesian Road Federation Summer School in
Salisbury. Tim has kept in touch with him from those days and some years ago
I visited him in Phoenix. His wife died some years ago. Last January at a
wedding he chatted up a widow Doris and in July he married her, took her on
a honeymoon on an 'unforgettable' Hawaii cruise and three weeks in Mission
Beach California. He is 'over the moon'. Not bad for an 82 year old!!
5566 David Macdonald expressed his appreciation for the UK Outpost and notes
that October 2006 was the 50th anniversary of his attestation in the BSAP.
He asks if anyone knows the whereabouts of 5441 Tony Jacques who was his
best man when he married in 1960. They were stationed together at Gwanda
from 1957-58 and that Tony went to Australia in the mid 1970s. David (who
retired as a Chief Inspector in 1976) also asks after 4947 Roy Welch. He
said that after he retired he joined the Police Reserve and worked under Roy
at CID Salisbury. Having spent all his service in Uniform Branch he found
working at CID a novel experience.
5958 Dick Isemonger, writing to Barry Henson, sends best wishes to UK old
comrades and says that having retired after 24 years service with 3M SA he
may visit the UK this year and would like to attend the Annual Dinner.
7964 Stuart Thompson, writing on a visit to South Africa in which he took
the opportunity to attend a Transvaal Branch monthly get-together at 'The
View', says that Dave Holmes would be grateful for information on (or from)
6459 David Trevor Wade (known as Trevor). Dave can be contacted by email at
dholmes@unitransmotors.co.za.. Stuart said that he had a very pleasant three
weeks in Johannesburg and will be off to Toronto in June 2007.

Obituaries
It is with regret that we report the following deaths .
We extend our deep sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.
Barbara Sherrard-Smith, widow of 4062 Ken Sherrard-Smith who died on
02./05/06 (see obits UK Outpost Summer 2006 (Issue 63) died on 22/10/2006.
She was not a member of the UK Branch.
3952 John "Bomber" DAVIDSON died peacefully in his sleep on the 04/01/2007
at the Athol Evans Centre where he was living. A member of 'The Alcantara
Mob' he served from 28/04/1946 to 31/05/1967. Before joining the Force
Bomber served with RAF Coastal Command as a wireless operator and air gunner
but his nickname had no relation to his flying experiences, at least not in
aircraft. It came from his Depot training during which he developed a
clinging association with R/H. Bomber.
Throughout his service he proved himself a most willing and hard working
policeman. His friendliness and his sense of humour made him a popular and
well-known figure and he served on many committees within and outside the
Force-Lions, Bowls committees, School Councils, the Police Club, the
International Police Association and many others. Tim Weimer notes that
Bomber was well known in the "Bowling" fraternity, especially his
involvement with the blind bowlers, saying that if memory serves he brought
some blind bowlers from Rhodesia over to the UK. On social occasions, Bomber
was much in demand for his "Muffin Man" act that required some degree of
acrobatic skill and nerves of steel.
5223 Colin Ames (Stan) STANDIVAN died at the Restdale Nursing Home, Malvern,
Durban on the 21/11/2006 aged 70. He had, for a long-time, been bedridden

'Skip' Rausch, was murdered at his home in Garsfontein (Pretoria), South
Africa on 14/12/2006 when thieves broke into his house and shot him whilst

Inspector. He is survived by his wife Connie to whom we extend our deepest
sympathy.

a well-known figure in the Margate /Ramsgate community. Our sympathies to
his wife Judy, sons and grandchildren.

P/R Air Wing Pilot (PR9255) Dudley Howson PAXTON died on 13/11/2006 in
Pretoria of natural causes. Dudley was 88 years of age and is survived by
his widow Eileen. The Transvaal branch had only recently received a letter
from Dudley apologising for not attending the regimental dinner but
stressing his pride in being a member of the Regimental Association and all
it entailed
5290 Brian Anthony David (Tony) GRAY died of heart failure in Johannesburg
on 28/11/2006. Tony served from 01/08/1954 to 10/09/1977 when he retired as
a Superintendent He had been member of the Transvaal Branch virtually since
its inception. For a while Tony was the Security Manager at the Carlton
Hotel in Johannesburg (during its heyday). Tony founded the Hotel Security
Association of South Africa of which association he was chairman for several

the association at either no, or minimal cost. His widow Lynn, his daughter
Arlene and son Brian survive him.
5396/6334 Pattrick Scott JEFFERIES passed away on 17/11/2006 at Brits, South

wife Helen and their daughter Phylida and son Simon. He served in the BSAP
from 1958-1961, mostly in Umtali where he met his wife, Helen, who was
nursing there. It was perhaps inevitable that Gwyn should make use of his
greatest asset - his beautifully modulated voice - and join the Federal
Broadcasting Company as an announcer. He was posted to Lusaka and then Kitwe
where he became Head of Broadcasting at the time of the introduction of
television to Northern Rhodesia. With the advent of independence his job was
Africanised but Gwyn had already been 'spotted' and was able to return to
