BSA Police Challenge Coin
I was delighted to receive my two BSA Police challenge medallions
recently per kind favour of a recent traveler. These coins
were designed by former member Will Cornell 6388, and manufactured
by Symbol Arts.
Challenge coins apparently became popular in World War II
where members of a special forces unit would carry their unit
coins where ever they went. This invoked the concept of challenges
to produce the coin if you were a member of the unit, and
if you failed to do so, you would suffer buying the next round!
I believe there were only 100 of these BSA Police challenge
coins minted, so there a loads of former members out there
who will be buying the drinks... make sure you challenge the
next former member you meet, if you have yours!
, but note that he may no longer have any remaining in stock

Another High Achiever: Ian Harries
Ian Harries (6587/8953) seems to have achieved physical heights
in the Everest region on two occasions. On the first trip
in 2010, Ian and another summited Kala Pathar (at 5723m) which
lies below Pumori, where they had the most exquisite views
of Mount Everest, the Khumbu Ice Fall, Lhotse and Nuptse.
Between them was the Khumbu Glacier.
The second trip, last year, (again just two of them with
Ian guiding) was sponsored and Ian was determined to see more
of the range. They walked to the Gokyo Lakes (to the west
of Everest), did Everest Base Camp (at 5364m), Kala Phattar
again (at 5723) and then Dingboche and Chhukhung to the south
and east of Everest looking up at the massive wall of Lhotse.
Ian adds "This trip lasted 33 days and it still wasn’t long
enough." Ian is still coaching in South Africa 20 March 2012

The
Mystery and Intrigue of the Two Kenyembas
Mike Harvey (6121) has submitted a very interesting article
that he has written about the location of the old Kenyemba
police camp (circa 1897) and the the controversy covered by
the Outposts in the 1960s. Entitled "The
Mystery and Intrigue of the Two Kenyembas",
Mike's article contains a number of maps and photographs and
also tells of the two toed people of the area. He would like
some comment and feed back from people, in all walks, who
are interested in this particular period of our history and
more so the location which is on the confluence of the Zambezi
and Luangwa Rivers. While Mike has suggested he would like
this placed with a broader audience of former members, the
article is a creative work protected by copyright and editors
wishing to use this material in their publications (Outpost
magazines) should please seek permissions accordingly.

Zimbabwe Government Re-commences Foreign
Pension Payments - Update
Peter Bellingham suggests that his last disclosure on this
subject may have raised false hopes of members worldwide for
the early commencement of their pension payments. He says,
"The information provided below is what we honestly
believed at that time from the information that was available
to us. However this does not now appear to be the case.
The pensions paid in South Africa were paid from a carryover
of $304,000.00 held by the Standard Bank from the time that
the Zimbabwe Government stopped paying external pensions.
Although some 3.5 million dollars is available for the payment
of external pensions at this time, the modalities of how
this is to be done have yet to be agreed upon. We are pushing
for all pension payments to be made using the services of
Crown Agents, who pay Federal pensions. This is by far the
cheapest service on offer."
However, as Crown Agents is a British Government Agency, and
local politics seems to have placed a spanned in the works.
Peter regret to advise, therefore, that until this impasse
has been overcome, no further external pensions will be paid.

Death:
Lionel Ludvig ‘Lummy’ Lumholst-Smith (aka Lumoltz) 3385
Alistair Black advises, with regret, the death of Lummy Lumholst-Smith
on 16 January 2012 in Cumbria, United Kingdom. Lummy, who
was brought up in Norway, joined the BSA Police May 1934 and
fell in with the likes of Arthur Baden-Powell (3383), who
was to inherit the title Lord from his famous father, and
Frank Barfoot(3342), later Commissioner of Police. After a
few years on remote district stations, Lummy served most of
his service in the Criminal Investigation Department, Salisbury.
He may have been one of the few officers involved in the early
start of the XB section (intelligence) of the CID, and also
served in Immigration, which then fell under the control of
the CID. He retired in August 1956, with the rank of Detective
Chief Inspector. Lummy joined the Rhodesian Grain Marketing
Board, where he served for many years. He was an active member
of the Mashonaland Branch, before returning to Norway, and
later a member of the UK Branch, when he eventually settled
in Cumbia, United Kingdom. Lummy was born on 12 March 1912,
and would have reached his 100th year this year. Our thoughts
and condolences go out to his family and friends, to whom
we extend our deepest sympathy. 18 December 2011

So Who is Visiting the Web Site?
Statistics on website visits are often meaningless due to 'crawlers' (applications used by the major search engines to index the web), but if you eliminate these and the more exuberant of the spamming nations top site visiting nations during December 2010 are South Africa (46%); Australia (19%); United Kingdom (13%); New Zealand (6%) and Zimbabwe (5%). This seems pretty consistent with where former members are now located, with perhaps exception of the UK...

United Kingdom: 2011 Braai - Newport, Shropshire
BSAP 2011 Braai will be held at Lilleshall National Sports
Centre, near Newport in Shropshire on Saturday 23rd July 2011.
It is a new venue, which has been checked by the committee
and should be eminently satisfactory. The site is set within
beautiful wooded countryside in the Welsh Marches and 40 minutes
drive from our memorial at Alrewas. The website is www.lilleshall.co.uk
that will give you a great deal of information about the site
and surrounding area.
The cost will be £25.00 per person for the braai. This is
more expensive than we previously paid, but the accommodation
available is far more reasonable. The menu is comprehensive,
but we will not be able to braai our own boerewors, that will
be done by the chef with the other meats.
Beds will be available for both Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd
July. Bed and Breakfast per person per night is £39.00. There
are a few twin rooms still available. First come, first served.
The later you book, the less likelihood there will be of me
being able to secure a room. There is a national training
day for cheerleaders on at the same time, and they are also
competing for rooms, but will not disturb our braai. There
will be no objection to you finding alternative accommodation
and only attend the braai, but you must register for that.
Lunch and dinner will be available in the restaurant at £9.60
and £11.50 per person. There is a good bar and we will have
exclusive use of a large section of it. The bar prices are
reasonable. There are also lunchtime snacks available at the
bar for those who do not want to use the restaurant, and Parry
Jones can confirm the quality and price of the snacks is excellent.
The braai will take the usual format with the Reunion Centre,
adjacent to the bar, with its displays and memorabilia shop,
being open from 10.30am, and the fire being started around
6.30 pm. The overall cost will be on a par with previous costs.
If you intend coming to the braai, send your application with
a deposit of £20.00 per person. Cheques payable to BSAP Association.
There will be no refunds once the bookings are made. Parry
Jones will be accepting payments only for bed and breakfast,
Friday night dinner, and the braai. Other meals/snacks will
be at individuals own expense. SatNav users should use the
postcode TF10 9LQ. If you wish to attend the Braai, please
communicate with
urgently. 1 May 2011

Harry Naismith announces the publication of a his book (a
Kindle Edition), Weapons
of Mass Destruction - The Zimbabwe Connection
which may be found on Amazon, if you follow the link, or click
on the image. A fiction title, Amazon has the following product
description, "The enigmatic David Bradley stumbles upon evidence
suggesting the Zimbabwe authorities have become custodians
of some of Saddam Hussein’s illusive weapons of mass destruction.
Realising this, the Harare regime, desperate to protect its
interests, puts a contract out on the potentially pernicious
Bradley. The trail leads to Iraq where the entrepreneurial
Bradley seeks to make ‘long bucks’ on a security contract
which in fact has been orchestrated to lure him to his death.
He survives two assassination attempts before goons from the
Mahdi army finally corner him on a roof-top in the city of
al Kut. The question is: can the Iraqi militants succeed where
previously others have failed abysmally?" 9 April 2011

BSA Police Regimental Association Centenary
The Centenary of the formation of the Regimental Association
will be in 2013. The Chairman of the Australian Branch of
the Regimental Association, Bob Gates (7045) has made a few
suggestions concerning this anniversary. These evolve around
a reunion of all members of the squads recruited and trained
in 1963 - their 50th Anniversary of commencement of service.
Obviously this is still in the melting pot, and other ideas
for functions and venue would be welcome. Bob's
communication can be seen at this link. I am
sure all ideas would be welcome and should be put forward
to your local Regimental Association Branch. In the interim,
if you were a member of the force with a number between 6826
and 7049 in may be useful for you to register
your details on the database for former members. 14 January 2011

David John Sloman 5695
Dick Glanville reports with deep regret the sad passing of
Dave Sloman on 4 January 2011 in Johannesburg South Africa.
Dave served in the BSA Police from April 1957 and continued
his service into the Zimbabwe Republic Police, retiring with
the rank of Ass. Commissioner in May 1983. He joined the plain-clothes
branch early in his career, firstly as a member of the Criminal
Investigation Department, serving mostly in the Matabeleland
Province during his early service. Dave was also involved
with Special Branch work at one time. He later transferred
to CID Salisbury and served on a few divisions and suburban
CID stations. During his service Dave was associated with
a regional committee of the International Police Association.
He was a supportive member of the Regimental Association and
served as President of the Transvaal Branch for several years
with great tact and dedication. Our thoughts and condolences
go out to his family and friends, to whom we extend our deepest
sympathy. 4 January 2011
The Eulogy at David's funeral was written by Dave Blacker
(5483) - delivered by Jock Pirrett (6610) - who had a few
poignant points to say about both Dave and the BSA Police,
"Our personal relationship started in the BSA Police
in Rhodesia and continued through the difficult transition
to Zimbabwe and on to the present day.
There have been many police officers, less gentlemen and a
very few who were both police officers and gentlemen but Dave
was one of that rare breed.
At CID Headquarters he was my number two and I could not have
had a fairer, more honest or stabilizing influence. The latter
trait being a blessing with my volatile temper at times.
For people who were not part of the BSAP it is perhaps difficult
to understand what a close knit fellowship we had and have
maintained ever since, but pride bound us together and pride
continues to bind our ever dwindling band. We bore together
the trials and tribulations of a bush war in which the ability
to depend on one another was so crucial and we could rely
on the fact that if we were in dire straits, aid would be
a certainty. We were one of the finest and most efficient
police forces in the world with perhaps the only blot on our
history being the Jameson Raid but I can vouch for the fact
that neither Dave or I took part in that. On leaving a country
we loved we all had to diversify into an alien world of commerce
and industry but we brought with us a trait now so sadly lacking,
integrity, and with it we adapted and again proved our worth.
Despite all this we never lost our comradeship and the BSAP
Regimental association flourished with Dave being a prominent
and respected member."

Model of BSA Police Trooper
Model Trooper
Richard Pike (8745) has been working furiously to complete,
what appears to be , a rather good model of a BSA Police Trooper,
which he intends to sell as a model kit leading up to Christmas.
For those of you who are keen on modelling, here is a wonderful
gift which will no doubt bring back plenty of memories and
definately be a great talking point when displayed proudly
on your mantlepiece!
The model, in resin (with lance in white metal), will stand
about 260mm in height (horse and lance) and is, apparently,
quite easy to construct. You will need paint and brushes,
perhaps a steady hand too. Richard has indicated that he would
be happy to build and paint models for a fee, for those without
the skills. Indicative price for former members and other
Rhodesian Forces will be £59.
Richard would like to get an order list together from former
members and resquests those interested to contact him soon by .
I am sure many former members will remember the magnificent
model of a trooper which used to be on display in the pub
of the old Enkeldoorn Hotel. 12 November 2010

Ten Year Service Medals
Peter Bellingham advises that since he commenced the exercise
to collect 10 Year Service Medals from PGHQ and dispatch them,
via branches, to the members concerned, he has been receiving
requests from members for 15 year Service Medals and for RGSMs.
Some enquiries about 10 Year Service Medals are being received
from former members who do not appear on the 3 lists of Medal
Recipients that were circulated to All Branches, and which
have been posted on the BSAP Web Site. PGHQ advise that they
have no other unclaimed medals of any former BSA Police members.
If any members from branches wish to pursue their claims for
medals, then I suggest that they write to PGHQ to claim their
medals. If sufficient numbers of ex members do this, then
PGHQ might, decide to have new medals minted. Peter thinks
that this is unlikely.

What is happening on Social Networks?
A couple of new groups have been set up in Facebook, which
is a social networking site. The most recent to be set up
is the BSAP
RA Rhodesian Section, by Duncan Waugh (9790)
and is targeted at, lets call them, the younger set of former
members who served the Republic, rather than the Crown. Duncan
has emphasized that this is not a break away initiative, but
rather a section intent on recruiting younger members into
the formal Association structures. There is also a Support
Unit Group now operational on Facebook. You will
find 55 and 125 members respectively here that you may network
with. The Original
BSAP Group is still functional and boasts 615
members. Social networking is not for everyone, and we would
encourage people not to disclose too much of their private
information on these networks. The
e-mail based discussion groups are still running
and remain a popular place for current exchange of information
about former members, not to mention the banter. The History
Group remains relatively active, and generally very interesting. 16 June 2010
