John ‘Jock’ Pirett writes, “… following schooling qualified with an LLB Hons from the University of Rhodesia. Following time with Attorneys, became the youngest Magistrate in Rhodesian history. Subsequently, qualified in tax matters and spent time with large corporations such as PWC in a tax legal capacity. He later changed direction and joined Old Mutual as Legal Advisor and later started his own tax / financial services practice which he continued till his passing. Whilst in Salisbury, Martin was a member of the A Reserve, a part of his life he always cherished with fond memories and admiration for the British South Africa Police. The writer first met Martin whilst on CID Nights in the early seventies. Apart from being immersed with legal work, he led a very active life and also proved an accomplished tennis player. Until his passing , Martin remained a very proud member of the Transvaal Branch of the Regimental Association and prepared our accounts for many years. Despite pain and suffering, only three weeks ago prepared and completed Transvaal Association tax returns, all up to date for the 2020 tax year.”

Posted at 16:40h, 24 AprilWhile National Service Martin was stationed at Rusape as our Prosecutor. Remember, reacting to the camp attack at Mayo Police station. Farmer ‘Cooper’ Smit ‘s tractor had just detonated a mine on the grid just before the station, followed close behind by local Magistrate and Martin in a soft skin bakkie. Such was the dedication to duty.
